ADMINISTRATION
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, Mark C. Reed
Mark has served as Executive Director since 1991 and was the
Zoo’s Assistant Director for 12 years prior to being
named Executive Director. Before beginning his career at the
Sedgwick County Zoo, Mark worked at the San Antonio Zoo, where
he acquired seven years of animal curatorial experience. Mark
is responsible for overseeing all areas of the Zoo operations
and future development. He is a member of the American Zoo
and Aquarium Association (AZA), where he is a
Past President of the Board of Directors, and he is currently
a Council Member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums
Organization (WAZA) and several national conservation agencies.
ASSISTANT
DIRECTOR, James H. Marlett
Jim has been in the zoo field since 1967. He has been at the
Sedgwick County Zoo since 1971. Jim is responsible for the
Zoo's animal, veterinary, graphics and education departments.
He is a member of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association,
the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles, the
Kansas Herpetological Society and the Wichita Audubon Society.
CHIEF
FINANCIAL OFFICER, Vickie L. Moore
Vickie has served as Chief
Financial Officer since 2004. Before beginning her career at
the Sedgwick County Zoo, Vickie was the Chief Financial
Officer at Price Bros. Equipment Co. for nine years.
ANIMALS
CURATOR
OF AMPHIBIANS, REPTILES & FISHES, Nate Nelson
Nate came to the Sedgwick County Zoo in 2006
as Senior Keeper from the Fort Worth Zoo Department of
Ectotherms. He is responsible for the management and
development of the amphibians, reptiles, and fishes
collection. Nate received a B.S. in Zoology from Missouri
State University in 2002 where he also continues graduate
research in Herpetology.
CURATOR
OF BIRDS, Joe Barkowski
Joe came to the Zoo in 1999 from the Houston Zoo where he
worked for eight years, as Senior Keeper in the bird department.
He is responsible for the development and management of the
bird collection. Joe received a B.S. in Zoology from State
University of New York at Oswego and an A.S. in Zoo Animal
Technology from Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville,
FL. Through the American Zoo and Aquarium Association, Joe
serves as Chair of both the Parrot TAG and the Turdco/Cuckoo
TAG. In addition, he works with the Avian Scientific Advisory
Group and the Pigeon/Dove TAG.
CURATOR
OF MAMMALS, Mike Quick
Mike came to the Zoo in 1995. He previously worked as the
General Curator of Sunset Zoological Park in Manhattan, Kansas,
where he spent over ten years, and the Cleveland Metro Parks
Zoo. Mike is responsible for the development and management
of the mammal collection. He is a member of the American Zoo
and Aquarium Association and Kansas/Paraguay Partners of the
Americas.
SENIOR
VETERINARIAN, William M. Bryant, DVM
Dr. Bryant has been the Zoo Veterinarian since 1982. As Zoo
Veterinarian, Dr. Bryant is responsible for all medical procedures
with the animal collection. He is a member of the American
Zoo and Aquarium Association, the American Association of
Zoo Veterinarians, the American Veterinary Medicine Association,
the Wichita Veterinary Medicine Association and the Association
of Central American Zoos.
VETERINARIAN,
Sandra Wilson, DVM
Dr. Wilson has been Associate Veterinarian since 1999. Dr.
Wilson received her D.V.M. from Iowa State University, and
her M.S. in Veterinary Clinical Sciences from Kansas State
University. She serves on the Animal Health Committee of the
American Zoo and Aquarium Association, and is a member of
several veterinary organizations.
DEVELOPMENT
DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR, Steve Onken
Steve came to the Sedgwick County Zoo in December of 2002,
as Development Director. In this position, he is responsible
for developing and managing plans for soliciting capital,
operating and special project support for the Zoo. In addition,
he directs staff in the development and management of the
Zoo’s Membership program; the Volunteer program; and
the Marketing, Public Relations and Special Events for the
Zoo. Prior to joining the Zoo, Onken worked at Emprise Bank
as Senior Vice President and Director of Marketing. He has
a B.S. in Journalism and Mass Communications from Kansas State
University. Currently, Steve is a member of the board of directors
for the Music Theatre of Wichita; and is currently a member
of the Advertising Federation of Wichita and the Public Relations
Society of America. He has previously served on the boards
of the American Cancer Society; Catholic Charities, Inc.;
Communities in Schools; Wichita Children’s Theatre and
Dance Center; Wichita Festivals, Inc.; and YMCA Camp Hyde.
Steve is also an active member of the American Zoo and Aquarium
Association.
VOLUNTEER
SERVICES DIRECTOR, Bridget
Landers
Bridget has been involved at the Sedgwick County Zoo since
1998 in everything from volunteering, working in grounds keeping
and even Zookeeping before she took on the position of Volunteer
Services Director in 2003. Her experience in the Army National
Guard helps her in every day operations as Volunteer Services
Director by organizing large groups of people to do everything
from special events to assisting Keepers in their daily routine.
Professionally Bridget belongs to the American Zoo and Aquarium
Association and is a member of American Volunteer Association.
EDUCATION
CURATOR OF EDUCATION, Schaneé
Anderson
Schaneé is a native of Omaha, Nebraska who started
her zoo career as a teen volunteer at Omaha’s Henry
Doory Zoo. She was hired as the Education Assistant at Henry
Doorly Zoo in 1990. Her transformation into a Kansan occurred
in 1992 when she became the Curator of Education at Sunset
Zoo, Manhattan, Kansas. Schaneé moved south to join
the Sedgwick County Zoo family as Curator of Education in
July 2003. She feels it is the best job in the entire Zoo
because she gets to interact with people and animals equally.
As Curator, she is in charge of all education aspects of the
Zoo including children’s classes, outreach, and school
programs. Her B.S. is in Environmental Science from the University
of Nebraska and her M.S. is in Elementary Education from Kansas
State University. Schaneé is an active member of the
American Zoo and Aquarium Association, National Association
for Interpretation, and Kansas Association for Conservation
and Environmental Education. In her spare time she enjoys
performing in community theatre and teaching for Friends University.
GRAPHICS
CURATOR OF EXHIBITS AND GRAPHICS, Jeanette
Summers
Jeanette started as Artist for the Zoo in 1987 and has been
Curator since 1999. She has a Fine Art degree from the
University of Dallas. Jeanette directs the design and
production of the Zoo's general signage, interpretive
graphics and devices, specialty exhibit design and
fabrication. She is a member of the American Zoo and
Aquarium Association, AZA's Graphics Advisory Group, Society
of Environmental Graphic Designers, Kansas Ornithological
Society, MATRIX Society of Printmakers.
GUEST SERVICES
GUEST SERVICES DIRECTOR, Steve Fairchild
Steve came to the Zoo in 1995. Before that, he worked as General
Manager of the Olive Garden Restaurant in Wichita, Kansas.
Steve is responsible for supervising all Guest Services including
food service operations, gift and merchandise sales, Zoo security,
the entry department, group event sales and catering. Professionally,
he is a member of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association
and the National Association of Concessionaires. Steve also
has been involved in Updowntowners, Old Town Association,
and River Festival development.
HORTICULTURE
CURATOR OF HORTICULTURE,
Missy Knight
Missy started at the Zoo in 1981 as a temporary employee and
has worked every possible position in the Horticulture Department,
including interm Curator, before becoming the Curator in 2001.
She is responsible for the care and upkeep of the 247 acre
Zoo. The large task of planting, irrigation, and even snow
removal fall under the Horticulture Department. Missy has
often said that the best part of her job is working with the
dedicated people in the Zoo, especially the grounds crew.
She is a member of the Association of Zoological Horticulture
(AZH), American Zoo & Aquarium Association (AZA), and
Kansas Association of Arboretum and Botanical Gardens (KAABG).
