Salmon-Crested Cockatoo

Cacatua moluccensis


Physical Characteristics

  • These birds have white feathers tinted with soft pink. The underside of the flight feathers and tail is tinged with yellowish-salmon. The broad, white, rounded crest has deep salmon-red inner feathers. The bill, legs and feet are black. The male has a black iris and the female has a reddish-brown iris.
  • Size of average adult
    • length: 20 inches form head to tail

Diet

  • Wild: seeds, grain and fruit

Behavior

  • Flight is usually long glides after a few wing beats
  • Nest in hollow trees, place wood chips in the hole
  • Reproduction
    • clutch size: 2 - 3 white eggs
    • incubation: 25 days
    • both parents help to incubate, young fledge at 3 months

Environmental/Global

  • Habitat: lowland forests and wooded mountain slopes
  • Distribution: southern Moluccan Islands in Indonesia
  • Status: CITES Appendix I
    • does damage to grain crops
    • pet trade
