Hawk-headed Parrot

Deroptyus accipitrinus


Physical Characteristics

  • These parrots have a buff-white crown and forehead, brown cheeks streaked with white, dark-red neck edged with blue, green back and wings, and the chest is dark-red edged with blue.
  • Size of average adult
    • length: 14 inches
    • weight: 0.5 pounds

Diet

  • Wild: fruits, seeds, nuts, berries, leaf buds and vegetable matter

Behavior

  • The unique crest or ruff is raised in a fringe that surrounds the head when excited or angry
  • Associates in pairs or small groups of no more than 20
  • Spends most of day feeding or resting in tree-tops
  • Fly low through the forest, rather than above the canopy
  • Reproduction
    • breeding season: March to April
    • clutch size: 2 - 3 eggs
    • incubation: 26 - 28 days
