Hawk-headed Parrot
Deroptyus accipitrinus
Physical Characteristics
- These parrots have a buff-white crown and forehead, brown cheeks streaked with white,
dark-red neck edged with blue, green back and wings, and the chest is dark-red edged with
blue.
- Size of average adult
- length: 14 inches
- weight: 0.5 pounds
Diet
- Wild: fruits, seeds, nuts, berries, leaf buds and vegetable matter
Behavior
- The unique crest or ruff is raised in a fringe that surrounds the head when excited or
angry
- Associates in pairs or small groups of no more than 20
- Spends most of day feeding or resting in tree-tops
- Fly low through the forest, rather than above the canopy
- Reproduction
- breeding season: March to April
- clutch size: 2 - 3 eggs
- incubation: 26 - 28 days
