Freshwater Stingray

Physical Characteristics

  • Body is a large, circular disk marked with spots. The slender tail is armed with a serrated, stinging spine. The spine produces venom, which is absorbed into the victim's wound.
  • Size of average adult
    • length: body = 12 inches, tail = 8 inches

Diet

  • Wild: worms, crustaceans and mollusks

Behavior

  • Bottom dweller
  • Spend time camouflaged in shallow water, often partially covered with mud
  • Reproduction
    • develop eggs internally, producing up to 12 young per litter
